A story of change

The first time Jayden walked into our gym, he wouldn’t look any of us in the eye. His mum brought him because he’d stopped going to school — the bullying had got so bad he couldn’t face it anymore. He was 11 years old and already exhausted. We didn’t push him to spar or to speak up. We just asked him to show up. Week after week, he did. Slowly, the kid who couldn’t lift his head started holding his hands up. He started talking to the other boys, helping the younger ones with their footwork, laughing again. I’ll never forget the day he came in and told us he’d walked back into school on his own. That’s not something I taught him — that’s something he found in himself. I just made sure he had a place to find it.
